Wake up to rich and refreshing cold brew.

Rich and powerful home-brewed cold coffee can be made at home, with the right machine. Instead of just icing hot coffee, the two main ways of cold-brewing coffee take longer. The long process creates a naturally sweeter, richer and more chocolatey flavor, with a balanced acidity that is easier on your stomach. Cold brew can also be made and stored in batches for up to two weeks.

The Expert: Elizabeth Briskin is a trained chef, food writer, recipe developer, and marathon runner, and coffee is both essential to sustaining her energy every day and a delicious moment she enjoys every morning. In the summer, she likes to turn her more typical hot coffee mornings into chilled glasses with clinking ice, and she especially craves the smooth flavor of cold brew.

What to Consider With Cold-Brew Coffee Makers

In the summer, there’s nothing like cold-brew coffee. Icy, concentrated and delicious, it’s the perfect pick-me-up, and a fantastic option to have at home. But cold-brew coffee can be made in many different ways, and depending on your lifestyle, one method may suit you much better than others. For maximum satisfaction, here are a few things to consider before you buy.

Capacity

Are you making cold brew just for yourself every once in a while, or for multiple people on a regular basis? The sizes here vary significantly, from 16-96 ounces.

Different methods

Cold brew is generally made two different ways: immersion and slow drip. With the immersion method, you soak coarse grounds in cold water for about 12-15 hours and then strain it. Slow drip closely resembles the process of traditional drip coffee, but takes several hours. You'll often hear that the immersion method results in a more full-bodied flavor.

There are a few options in here for those who want to make it on the go. (Both of these, it should be noted, require an electrical outlet to work).

Portability and practicality

Many of the coffee makers should “live” on the counter, while other more portable makers can be stored completely in the fridge when in use, or in a cabinet when not.

PM: Can you make cold brew with a regular coffee maker?

EB: If your regular coffee maker is a french press, then yes, this will work for cold brew. Simply use cold water and let it brew overnight in the fridge before plunging and straining. A drip-style or pour-over coffee maker will not work for cold brew, as the beans need to steep in the cold water for hours to produce the flavor you’re looking for.

PM: What’s the difference between cold brew and iced coffee?

EB: Cold brew coffee is brewed by steeping ground beans in cold or room temperature water for up to 24 hours. Ice coffee, on the other hand, is brewed using hot water in just a few minutes. This is then cooled and served over ice.

PM: Does cold brew have more caffeine than regular coffee?

EB: Cold brew actually contains less caffeine than coffee brewed with hot water. The hot water extracts more caffeine from the beans than cold or room-temperature water. The strength of the flavor of your coffee will depend on how long it’s brewed, as well as the kind of beans and the grind you use.
